Salvador grew up in Uganda, East Africa and then moved to England in 1965 with his family. He was an undergraduate at University College, London and then completed his postgraduate studies at the University of Birmingham. He later returned to East Africa where he was a Lecturer in Zoology at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. After some postdoctoral work in London he moved to Davis in 1983.
